About Department

Department of Biotechnology in Karnataka State Open University was established in the year 2012 and introduced a unique Master‘s Degree Programme in Biotechnology in the year 2013. The main objective of this programme was to provide quality education at any age and produce skilled biotechnologists at affordable cost, especially for those working professionals who couldn‘t attend regular courses in conventional universities. The Department of Biotechnology comes under the ambit of School of Sciences and offers Masters and Doctoral Degree in Biotechnology. The curriculum of Master’s degree is designed to suit the current needs of the industrial sectors. The department has first rate infrastructure with high quality laboratories, well equipped classrooms, and auditorium and research facilities. In the department, learners are introduced to basic biotechnological concepts and techniques so that they learn, practice and apply this knowledge / skill for their productive careers in various fields. Comprehensive fundamentals of the program prepare the learners to advanced study in specialized microbiological and other interdisciplinary courses. Learners will be trained to be independent and creative to gain required competence for the competitive and ever changing job opportunities. The programme is offered in tune with mission of the university in terms of affordability, mass skill development and excellence. The faculty members who have acquired the skill in respect of contemporary issues have contribute their mite to make the programme highly meaningful in the competitive arena. The teaching faculty has wide ranging experience along with professional and academic credentials to train students in Open Distance Learning mode. They have published several original research articles in high quality journals and text books. The students are encouraged to carry out in-house projects in the department and encouraged to publish their research findings.
